Watch out, even if you’re vaccinated! Israel’s data shows that the Pfizer vaccine is only 39% effective as Delta spreads.
What?! 😲 Why is that low?
Many of us would have an impression that it has quite a high efficacy rate – previous studies did show that they were >90% effective.
But Delta is changing the situation. Israel’s latest data shows that the efficacy rate dropped to 39% as Delta becomes the dominant strain there.
- v.s. Two weeks ago: an earlier estimate two weeks ago still shows a 64% efficacy rate.
- v.s. UK 🇬🇧 got different results: It conflicts with data in UK that found the shot was 88% effective against the Delta variant.
Do we need to worry then?
The two-dose vaccine 💉 still works very well in protecting people from getting seriously sick. Israel’s data shows it’s 88% effectiveness against hospitalization and 91% effectiveness against severe illness.
Delta looks dangerous..😟
Agreed. Last week brought us further concern about the faster-spreading delta Covid-19 variant. (P.S. Remember Monday’s global stock market selloff over Delta concerns?)
#1 US had its worst Covid week in three months, with weekly cases surging fourfold.
- Los Angeles health officials said one-in-five of the infections in June were fully vaccinated, and they warned that the number could go up further this month.
#2 Olympics started, but cases jumped
The Olympics finally started last Friday in Japan, despite the threats of Delta. But it also reported a record number of daily new infections linked to the Games.
Good luck to the Tokyo Olympics, and all the athletes.
